As an interior decorator one of the things that requires some extra effort is art for my clients. It is crutial that I dig a little deeper in this area because art is such a personal thing. I have found that someone's particular decorating style and what they gravitate towards for the rest of the room is not always consistent with their preferences when it comes to the art they ultimately select. Any decorator can come in and add the pieces that will compliment the decor, but what emotion do those pieces evoke in the people living with them every day? I'd like to talk about some of the different types of art to get you thinking about how it can be incorporated into your spaces to increase the feel you're looking for.

Holiday Art:

Holiday art is a perfect place to start because most people know this is a great way to bring the excitement and feelings of a holiday into your home. Translate this same idea into the art you have in your home throughout the rest of the year. Think about how you want your home or a peticular room to feel.

Art from a specific era:

This type of art is perfect for bringing in the feel of an era. For instance pioneer art can pull together a room that has a very country feel or one that has a lot of american antiques. Adding in Renaissance art can help to creat the feel of that era, even if there aren't functioning period pieces in the space.

Mirrors as art:

Alot of people prefer mirrors as art. This is in some cases because it's art without a committal to a theme or style. You could also say it is art in the style of the space it reflects. A great thing about mirrors becides reflecting their surroundings is that in a lot of cases mirrors are placed to be used for one to look into, in a sence being a self portrait. Think about how often you pass a mirror when you don't take a quick peek at yourself.

Abstract Art or Modern Art:

Abstracts can bring in a great contemporary feel. For those who prefer this type of art, it can be very thought provoking. A fun thing about this type of art is that even if it's not something you gravitate towards, it usually still evokes a quite strong response, be it good or bad.

Family or Ancestrial photos:

Family photos are a type of art that all of us can relate to. They remind us of a time or place, of children since grown, or of loved ones who have past. This can be a great way to serve as a remind of who we are and/or where we came from.

Religious Art:

For those who have this type of art in their home, it is a symbol of their beliefs. The art serves as a reminder of sacrifices made and can help to keep goals and standards at the front of their minds on a daily basis.

While there are still many, many other types of art to choose from, my goal with this sampling is for you to think of art as a necessary piece in putting together your finished space. Think about and understand what you want your home to do for your mood and your life and choose your art accordingly. Always remember your home is your space, make it right for you and your family.

Every year we see style and color trends change, even if just slightly. If you are paying attention, you will notice the trends that happen in the fashion apparel world are tied to trends in the interior fashion industry.
